A window to escape

Dernière mise à jour : 27 avr. 2020

To fellow readers

‘When surrounded by books, you’re never alone’.

It is true. It’s a neverending story. Aren’t you excited when you start a new book, a novel, a thriller? Even having read the abstract you don’t know anything about the story, the conclusion. Description after description you draw the lines of the characters, the landscape, the neighborhood. Despite the protagonists depiction, personality and psychology, you have for sure someone in your mind, someone real who doesn’t have anything in common with the characters of the book but fits really well for the role. The last words get you to amazement, sadness, disappointment, uncertainty but have given you for a moment the pleasure of being elsewhere living someone else’s life. Books have this power. A break in your ordinary existence. A development of imagination, a work on memory.

What are the books that have given you those feelings?

Cecilia,

I may be strange but books oppressed me. I read a lot, but all the books I bought are only referring to my narrow vision of the world. It is a constant reminder of how little I know...

Dear Cecilia

You are so right!!

When reading your post, one particular book just popped in my mind from I don't know where! I read it once when I was 15, and now I'm 41!!

It was Le Horla from Maupassant

I guess this book made quite an impression on me, and I wouldn't feel alone whilst reading it, but in such scary way!!

Anyhow and jokes apart, I completely agree with you.

Books can be such a great escape !

Hi Cecilia, I could'nt disagree with you, even more nowadays when everyone must be alone, and our choice to make our study at distance make us understanding that more than others. The books make so much for us ... an Escape when we feel bad, but also something that can make us see the things at a new scale, or looking the truth hide by the society state of mind. Books can change the world because they can change the peoples who live in it.

Hi,

Thank you Céline and Laetitia for your posts. Indeed Montesquieu was right.

Hi Cécilia,

For me they all are!!! I totally agree with you. For me books are an escape, a way to run away from my life to live dozens of others! Forgetting one's own worries and living, through the pages, those of the characters. For me each book resonates differently in each of us, it becomes the reflection of our deepest feelings ! "An hour of reading is the sovereign remedy against the disgusts of life" (Montesquieu)

Great post !!
